Watch Tonight asks you a few questions and suggests three movies you can actually watch on the services you already pay for. This page explains exactly what the app collects, why it needs it, who else sees it, and how to get rid of it.
Who is responsible
Watch Tonight is operated by Adam Dow, who is the data controller for the information described here.
You can reach me at support@watchtonightapp.com.
What the app collects
When you create an account
- Your name and email address. You provide these when you sign up. If you use Sign in with Apple or Google, they come from that account instead. If you choose Apple's option to hide your email, I only ever see the relay address Apple generates.
- The country you select. This is a country you pick from a list, not your device's location. The app never requests location access.
As you use the app
- The streaming services you tell the app you subscribe to.
- Your quiz answers and the movies suggested in response.
- Movies you save, mark as watched, or turn down, so the app can build your library and avoid offering you the same thing twice.
Advertising
The app shows one advertisement while your picks are being prepared. It is served by Google AdMob, and Google collects:
- an advertising identifier for your device
- an approximate location, estimated from your IP address
- your interactions with the advertisement
- crash and performance information from Google's own advertising software
Why, and the legal basis for it
| Information | Why it is needed | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Name, email, account | To create your account and sign you in | Performance of a contract |
| Country and streaming services | To only suggest movies you can actually watch | Performance of a contract |
| Quiz answers and library | To choose your picks and not repeat them | Performance of a contract |
| Personalised advertising | To pay for running the app | Your consent |
| Non-personalised advertising | To pay for running the app | Legitimate interests |
Advertising and your choices
Before any personalised advertisement is shown, the app asks for your consent through Google's consent form, and on iOS it also asks Apple's tracking permission question. You can say no to both.
Saying no does not reduce what the app does. You will still get the same picks; the advertisement simply stops being personalised. On iOS you can change your answer at any time in Settings, under Privacy and Security, then Tracking.
Who else receives your information
- Supabase stores your account, your library and your quiz history, and handles signing you in.
- Anthropic chooses your three picks and writes the short explanation beneath each one. It receives your quiz answers and a list of candidate movies. It does not receive your name, your email, or any identifier that points back to you.
- Google serves the advertisement, as described above.
Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with anyone else for their own marketing.
Where your information is stored
Your account and library are held on servers in London, in the United Kingdom, which the European Commission has recognised as providing an adequate level of data protection.
Anthropic and Google process data in the United States. Those transfers rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses and, where applicable, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
How long it is kept
Your account and everything attached to it are kept until you delete your account. There is no separate retention period and nothing is archived afterwards.
One exception, stated plainly because it is a real one: the app keeps a record of what each request to the AI costs to run. When an account is deleted, those cost records are kept but the identifiers linking them to you are permanently removed, so what remains cannot be traced back to any person.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from inside the app: open the Profile tab and choose Delete account. You will be asked to type a confirmation word, because it cannot be undone.
Deletion is immediate and takes everything with it — your profile, your chosen services, your library, the movies you turned down, and your quiz history. You do not need to email me to have it done, and there is no waiting period.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the information held about you
- have anything inaccurate corrected
- have your information deleted
- ask that its use be restricted, or object to that use
- receive it in a portable, machine-readable form
- withdraw consent for personalised advertising at any time
Email support@watchtonightapp.com and I will respond within one month.
If you are not satisfied, you can complain to your national data protection authority. In Italy that is the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali.
Children
Watch Tonight is not intended for children. If you believe a child has created an account, email me and I will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it. Where a change materially affects you, you will be told in the app rather than left to notice it here.
